Lunar Tartan Stole
A Legacy of History and Heritage - Fresh from the Loom
The Lunar Tartan Stole is a truly special piece, woven with tradition, history, and timeless elegance. Originally designed by Ian Maxwell and Alistair Irving in 1972 to mark astronaut Neil Armstrong’s visit to Langholm – the ‘Muckle Toon’ and his tour of Gilnockie Tower, Historic Home of Clan Armstrong. The Lunar Tartan reflects the subtle tones and colours found on and around the moon’s surface.
The original stole was gifted to Janet Armstrong, Neil Armstrong’s wife, during their visit to Langholm and Gilnockie Tower. In 2022, Armstrong’s family returned to Gilnockie Tower to mark the 50th anniversary of Neil’s historic visit, gifting the original stole to Gilnockie Tower as a symbol of their deep connection to the area.
This exclusive stole is crafted with care and precision, featuring the stunning lunar-inspired tartan. Woven at Ian Maxwell’s Drove Weavers Mill in Langholm, it embodies both the heritage of Scottish craftsmanship and the wonder of Neil Armstrong’s historic achievements.

Just choose Self Pick up at checkout and your purchases will be ready for you to collect on your visit to the Ancestral Home of the Armstrong Clan, Gilnockie Tower. And of course no shipping fee to pay plus take advantage of any discounts we may have running at the time of purchase.
